Marimekko – FW17

Marimekko is probably one of the most respected and well known clothing brands in Europe. Famous for its colorful and flowery designs, its name can be translated as “Flower of Mary”. The brand was founded by textile entrepreneur Armi Ratia in 1951, an epoch in high need of this kind of symbols. As time passed, the poppy pattern designed by main designer Maija Isola has become a timeless classic, almost an emblem for this Finnish brand.

On this year Finland will celebrate its 100th independence anniversary, and Marimekko just could not let pass the opportunity to celebrate this important date. The fall/winter 2017 collection was inspired by Finnish art, architecture and all the epic, mythological stories told in the Kalevala, the foundational book of the Finnish nation. Graphic, more linear than curvy, with ample cuts and full of state of the art textiles, this new collection renders a fair honor to Finland and its history.

A special presentation took place in Paris during the Fashion Week. Editors, journalists, buyers, fashion insiders and photographers could take a closer look to the garments in the Finnish embassy, just the right place to admire it and get in touch with Marimekko’s world.
