Nabil Nayal – Elisabethan Sportswear

by Abdon FLORES

“Narratives of the past, filtered through an innovative lens.” Such is the motto of Syrian-British designer Nabil Nayal, whose stylish concept of Elizabethan Sportswear throws a pristine light on the scene of fashion. Dutch paintings from the 17th century come into mind immediately when his creations are posed for captions. It is this old, classical yet astonishing take that captures the eye and the spirit.

Selected as a finalist for the prestigious LVMH prize for Young Fashion Designer 2017, Nabil Nayal has a solid career behind him despite his youth: Burberry Prorsum, awards by the Royal Society of Arts and the British Fashion Council, as well as some notable clients like Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna or Claudia Schiffer.

The so called Part. IV of his Elizabethan project is actually a fall-winter collection (2017) that renders this mysterious, sophisticated allure one envisions in a Peter Greenaway movie. Volumes and collars, some deconstruction in the design, boldness and the fluidity of fabrics that achieves to capture a glimpse of the England history. The creations of Mr. Nayal are an elaborated narrative resulting in strong and wearable looks.
